FFB Client Development Update VIII
Bug situation: Version 0.4.4 is out and proves to be very stable. Which means not a single server crash so far. Server crashes always take the highest priority on my ToDo-List, because they spoil the fun for everyone (your game hangs up because some action in a parallel running game crashes the server). Next come bugs that put the game in a state where you cannot continue playing (hangup). Those are caused by the server state not matching the client state (usually the server expects a command that the client doesn't send so the game cannot continue). The rest of the bugs is rule inconsistencies and general things-not-working-as-they-should stuff.

I've got help: Aside from WhatBall assisting with the graphics both Grod and Hangar19 have joined the team to help with bugfixing. My next major task is to show them around, explain design and architecture, answer questions etc. After 2 years of piling on stuff it most certainly will not be easy for them and it will take some time to become productive. But at least everything is set up for them to begin. BattleLore has re-started working on inducements (I hope he sees it through this time ;-)

Site integration: Adding to his usual Fumbbl workload Christer has several site integration tasks to finish: adding the possibility to upload player icons, chose player gender, uploading new lrb6 default portraits and icons, coding the lrb6 pre- and post-game phase (e.g. journeymen), prohibiting illegal skill choices, building a frontend for the admin console and more... The client striving to be as well integrated as possible with the site puts a lot of strain on him as well. Go Christer! :-)

A team of 6 volunteers are well on their way to producing a superior game compared to a million-dollar commercial effort.

Congrats, and keep at it. You guys are going to be legends.

frontend for the admin console?

admin client?????
Posted by Kalimar on 2010-05-01 00:01:04
Admin console = tool for the admins to send commands to the running game server to close, concede, delete games, list active games, send messsages to all clients and shutdown the server. Something that eases the day-to-day work the admins of this site do for our enjoyment, really. No more differences in result uploads with the new system, for instance.

i can only imagine the workload you've been piling on all by yourself and all along the line for month and years.

how's your hearing doing?

don't feel hassled by all the high expectations and tune in to your own rhythm - it's gotten you very far and everything looks very cleanly done and promising!

btw: super-quick bugfixing, too - i'd love to have that rate of defect-fixing with the people in my project at work ;-)

Will the new client have a way to mark the pitch in a way that only the coach will see like the old client.

As it stands on the Ski Junkie client you can mark up to 5 spaces at a time by holding shift and clicking on it with the Mouse. It marks the squares with a number 1 through 5 in order of the first one that was marked. The coach can remove the numbering in the same way it was added.

I find it quite useful to save on counting several distances over and over again. It also helps to speed up game time because you can use it to plan ahead during your opponents turn.
