Now I probably don't have nearly enough experience to run a league of my own, so I really don't know why I thought of this, but if someone wants to rip it off for whatever reason, sure knock yourself out.
Anyhow, a few days ago I browsed the forums for the first time in a while and spotted a thread about long-term leagues, NHL, NFL, real life league style. Now I understand the main problem with this too however; people ditch midseason reasonably often even with 8 game seasons, and therefore a 50-game or even 20-game season wouldn't stand a chance, 20-week long seasons just aren't that interesting. However, I always like the idea of long-term leagues, with full on home games and away games, rematches during the same season making rivalries, playoffs and eventually a tournament at the end. So I thought up a compromise.
Have a long season, but have it divided into little bite-sized chunks. Organize the teams into divisions of 8 or so, standard sized, and start off with a conference season, typical 7 game affair, face every team in your division once. After those 7 weeks, there's a one week break during which people can drop out or "park" if they don't want to participate in the next section; nationals. Divisions are temporarily resolved, and everyone is randomly scheduled against 10 opponents from any division, including their own, and again they're scheduled on that week-by-week basis. 10 weeks later, another 1 week break and then playoffs (note that if you skipped nationals and somehow managed to remain on top of your division, you ARE allowed to qualify for the playoffs if you wish). Again, if you don't want to participate in the playoffs or the grand tournament you can drop out/park at this point with no penalty. Depending on the number of divisions, the top teams (W/D/L record for the total season including both divionals and nationals) of each division are put into a round robin tourney. And then the Grand Tournament; if you participated in the playoffs and won, you HAVE to do this, no ducking out now. Again, depending on the size of the league, have a knockout tournament, and crown the champion of the league. And then start again.
Assuming a reasonably large array of 4 divisions with 8 coaches each, and no dropouts/parks, this means a 7 week long divisional season, 1 week off-season, 10 week nationals season, 1 week off-season, top 2 from each division in the playoffs for a 7 week playoff season, and then 4 way ko tourney to finish off the season (2 weeks). This makes the entire combined season 28 weeks long with 26 total rounds (and max games per team for the season). The last 9 weeks only involve a few teams which could be a problem, but I suppose the other teams can have friendlies and maybe even minors during that off season.
The main problems I see occurring are these:
- 28 weeks between the beginning of every season means that if you want to join the league you have to wait up to 7 months before a new season starts, as new applicants wouldn't be able to join during nationals or the playoffs.
- Despite consisting of "mini-seasons" for the most part, same as other leagues, this one would still require a large amount of commitment if you wanted the playoffs and final tournament to have any real meaning
So what do you people think? Any other holes to point out, or does it actually seem like a doable idea? If I were to get enough confirmed support I might try to get something off the ground myself...
EDIT: Oh silly me, it was a blog not a forum thing. This is what got me thinking:
