Several mac users reported that java wouldn't start for them. I had the same issue, and some googling brought me to
this thread.
Apparently the problem is that Apple made the minimum version build 06-435, while the current version is build 06-434. So that means even the latest isn't new enough, they say. You can edit which version to accept as new enough using the following terminal command. (requires admin privileges)
sudo defaults write /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta JavaWebComponentVersionMinimum "1.6.0_37-b06-434"
sudo chmod +r /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. plist
You will be prompted for your password.
This turns the mimimum version setting to build 6 434, which is the current one. Doing this fixed the problem for me.
