I never tried, but according to the page you can play over LAN (needing 2 copies of the game), or in hotseat mode (needing only 1 copy, and handing over the mouse/keyboard/controller to your mate after your turn)

Zakatan; you can tell the players apart, it's just that your practiced eye is only practiced for fumbbl. I suffer the same, but it gets better over time. In this case it was a mirror matchup, and the colour scheme determines how well they can be told apart. However, the active team's players have rings around the bases, which helps to tell them apart.
