So I ask, what again is the appeal to black box?
22 Games played with my High Elves and once you get over ~ TR 140 the box just sucks the life out of you.....
I have had some bad luck with the opponents getting the ball (I desperately need to get a kicker) but I am having a hell of a time skilling my guys if I never get SPP's. 1 or 2 passes a game and an MVP is not going to get me anywhere fast. Is the key to just fire all my positional players but 2 and try and keep my TV low so I can manage a low TV? Just keep on trucking along hoping one out of 10 games is against someone not chaos? Where are the Orcs and Dwarfs? I have played one Orc team and looking back they are retired....actually, most of the Elf teams I have played are retired. The teams that I have played and not retired when they are of the Chaos or like flavor, are teams that are managed to a low TV. Is this in the spirit of the game?
I find myself in these matches NOOBing it because these 1-0, 2-1 grinds that I am constantly on my heels are freaking dull. And they just keep pressing hoping I snake a dodge or run out of rerolls so they can pummel me....which always seems to happen. I am keeping my opponents under 40 blocks a game but jesus....I have suffered 18 casualties in 3 games to my opponents 0. I have been lucky to not have any truly permanent injuries but at this pace it is going to happen. By the second half the game is mind-numbingly stupid...."I am losing 1-0 and I want to tie....let's see....I have 3 guys on the pitch and only one is in range of the ball carrier in the cage. My other option is dodge those guys out and make a 3 man wall that they will easily get through. You know what, let's do it. Let's make that 5+ dodge into the cage with Dwarfs guarding a bull with the ball." Great idea.
I find it difficult to be entertained and joyous over these matches. I go into the match positive with intention to be cordial...then come out irritated, bored and pissed off. Maybe I am just a crap coach and that's cool, but I see a lot of coaches that are terrible and win with these teams.
If you guys don't mind I am going to go crawl back in my hole and hide under a rock.

You have 6/22 games against Chaos and Chaos Dwarves.
However 4 of the last 5 is enough to break one's spirit, felt the same in my HLP sprint last season where I got 4 straight against chaos dwarves.
The Box is fine, try some dwarves for a while ;)

@Jimmy....that is a nice Helf team stonetroll has, and one hell of a record.
@Cdassak....Yeah, almost a third of my games are against Chaos varieties and I have yet to face Nurgle. That will probably be next! :-)

High elves have a hard time at start for sure, but once you get specialist catchers and blitzers it gets better. I'd suggest kicking the niggler, and rolling some +stats on the positionals.
Mind you, you will still get bashed out most of the time. The trick is to keep cool and look for the way to win the game anyway, no matter how short you are on players. I finished my sprint for this season with something like -50 cas difference.

Gotta say tho, i drew an awful lot of clawpomb teams in the last days as well. But there is fluctuation and it will get better again most probably.
Certainly skill level/ challenge is also just higher in box, thats how it is.

@Bill Brasky......I keep coming to the box because ranked has so many panty wearing ladies that I have to sift through on gamefinder. I do like Ranked for the fact you can choose different matches depending on your mood but I also dislike it because everyone is looking for that optimal match-up. I guess I will cut another notch in the belt and man-up....

The Box is the way you make sure you're not picking and you're not facing anyone who has. But you have to wait for intervals, so that's annoying.

To answer your first question: the appeal to playing in Blackbox is that you are more likely to get a match in under 30 minutes. Depending on what time of day you play.
Surprised you haven't faced many dwarves/orcs. They are out there.

Box is a challenge, plain and simple. I view it as a journey unto itself where you will be on your toes if you play a variety of teams. With that said, I would suggest you not play Box if you're not roleplaying, challenging yourself explicitly, or you are against the premise of Ranked (and fancy yourself a man).
I'd like to have a happy medium with more variety and hopefully there will be an influx of new coaches with NAF and they have a similar view.

Hmm I´d trim the TV some.
You´re at 1710 - and no really great players - Loose the Niggler - that´s 110 k straight there, I´d also take leader on the Thrower and loose a RR - 30k more. I´d change two Catchers into linemen (They´re vulnerable and not really necessary) another 40k there. In a game or two you could go from 1710 to 1530. I´m pretty certain you´d find it a lot better there.

Over time you start to notice long runs of bad luck, say 15 games, followed by 2 or 3 good ones, then 15 more bad ones. It's those 2-3 in the middle that keep the addict back for more. ;))

Just to prove how funny nuffle is I get paired up against the same Chaos team I had played a few games ago....this time, because I got 300K in inducements and lots of luck, I was able to pull out a 3-1 victory.
A few things....
*I had the wizard which is overpowered, especially in the hands of Elves.
*My opponent had terrible block dice for the first half.
*I made some rolls that were borderline silly to go up 2-0.
*Receiving the kick-off to start the game makes a huge difference when facing killer teams.
*Nuffle must be a woman.

Most likely you have a better win rate in Ranked because you are not choosing so many challenging matches as what Box forces on you. Blackbox is good fun but you can get the odd bad streak. And maybe after a while you will learn how to best use the Elves advantages over bashers so it could make you a better coach. But of course having stat ups and leapers etc would all help. You don't have any players with more than one of the good sacking/cage breaking skills.

Part of the issue is that NerdBird has only been using one team and now they are past 15 games. It will probably get worse once they are past 30.

As for becoming a better coach. If you don't get some variation you may become great at beating bashers but crap vs anything else. ;)

Play all games in the box as if that would be the last one for that team. (I personally have hard time imagine that, so I joined the pink slip death match group with my bbox teams, so if they lose they are retired.)
If your players die, then you can make a new team. It is much more entertaining to win the game, than to fear the end, and do the painful rebuilding process. Why not cut the painful rebuilding process if you don't like it? Play the game you are in, do not worry about the rest.

As opposed to strategies that don't involve pointing and clicking? There are plenty of clawpomb-heavy teams that don't play a good positional game. Those teams lose.
