Italians...
What is wrong with some Italians on FUMBBL? There is an infamous cherry picker/minmaxer that everybody knows, and he's from Italy. I avoid him, but sometimes I meet some Italian coachs that are just as bad. Today I was playing this game, coach didn't even answer to me when I said "hi, have a good game", so I assumed he didn't speak English. At a certain point I was losing 0-2, few turns to the end of the game. He typed "?", then stopped moving his players. I waited 'til the end of his time, then asked him if something was wrong. He was in the game, he didn't left it. He didn't answer. I waited again, then I checked his page and found out he's Italian. So I asked him in Italian if there was some problem, I got no answer. I asked him again, then I said if I got no answer again I was going to call the timeout. I waited, then called the timeout. I blocked only 2 of his players to free mine in 2 turns, he was nowhere to be found. I picked the ball and had the chance to block more of his players, I didn't do that because it seemed unfair. Then he showed up saying he had connection problems, saying he sent me a PM. That was true, but I didn't checked the PM box so I couldn't know. He started to accuse me to be a stealer, said "And you're a FUMBBL supporter, too", basically calling me a cheater and stuff like that. I am many things but not a stealer, so I refused to score to show him that I am a fair player. I didn't got a single SPP from the 2 turns he was away (but he was in the game. Can one have connection problems without leaving the game?). He started to type nonsense stuff like "EAHAHAH AEAHAHAH HEAEAEA" and called me unfair again, so I started to name him for what he is, better not to write it down here. In the end I didn't score, I don't think I did something wrong, only thing I didn't see the PM he sent me.
After the game he sent me another PM saying "Next time your opponent go offline you better run and score, funny funny EAHAHAHA AHAEEA AHAHAHAH".

Seriously, I thought leaving Italy was enough to get rid of certain people. Next time I'll double check location before I accept a game.

P.S. : there are nice coachs from Italy as well. I know that, but... EAAHAHAH AHAHAHAH AYAEAHAHAH!

I played this Spanish idiot too. What a tosser.

Then there was this English guy. Total lunatic.

Not to mention that Yank who is a grade A buffoon.

Then there's that Dutch guy who... oh, wait, the Dutch are harmless.

On a slightly related note, I'm finding now sometimes I drop from the game but still in the game, it just freezes. If this happens during your turn, or while I am waiting for you to sidestep etc I don't always notice.

It use to be that when there was a problem the window would crash for me, but this isn't always the case now.

Personally, I might time a guy out once, but if he hadn't stated the turn after 4 minutes, I would suspect something wasn't right at his end. I don't really know what the site rules are here.
Posted by easilyamused on 2014-08-06 15:53:02
Yes it can happen. It actually happens quite a lot since the last server problem.

Rule of thumb. If your opponent hasn't moved for a while one of you has probably got a frozen client, if you type and it doesn't show up it's you. If it does show up it's him. Check PM's and how long the coach has been inactive on the site before timing out.

I'm seeing far too many of these cases for my liking and a bit of basic investigation by coaches would normally prevent this from happening.
Posted by Crook666 on 2014-08-06 15:54:52
Yeah, next time I'll do that. It's just that... AAHAHEAHAHAHA AHAEAEAEA EAHAHAYAEAE.

God, he infected me...
Posted by easilyamused on 2014-08-06 15:56:27
Also, this was an illegal timeout. If you opponent hasn't done anything for the majority of his turn with no talking then it needs to be treated as per the disconnection rules.
Posted by Crook666 on 2014-08-06 15:59:11
So @easilyamused, what is the purpose of the timeout button? Just remove it if we cannot use it in such situations.
Posted by awambawamb on 2014-08-06 16:00:47
"the neighbour's grass is always greener"
Posted by easilyamused on 2014-08-06 16:02:47
You can use the timeout button if your opponent is playing slow. No problems at all with that.

If your opponent has disconnected though and you time them out then you are using the button to get an unfair advantage.
Posted by easilyamused on 2014-08-06 16:04:43
And while we are at it I want to ask you about something you've said in your blog.

"I asked him again, then I said if I got no answer again I was going to call the timeout."

He didn't answer you the first time and didn't move any players. What made you think a threat was going to work?
Posted by Kam on 2014-08-06 16:05:27
There is indeed no way to know is your opponent has disconnected or not in this case, but if it happens to you (aka: you have DCed but the client window is still opened), the chat window will stop working. If that happens, just relaunch the client.

The moral of this story is... If you get time out'ed under similar circumstances, don't blame anyone but yourself: it simply means you're a boring, silent coach. ;)
Posted by awambawamb on 2014-08-06 16:05:30
oh, and the purpose of the timeout button is to force extremely slow players to comply to the site rules:

"Don't start a game where there is a chance you won't be able to finish without your opponent knowing about it. Unless you state otherwise, you are expected to be able to play for 90 minutes"

we know that everyone has his own concept of time. the rules were thought to leave a fair amount of time to end a match and not mess up with someone else's schedule, that probably includes other things that being online on fumbbl.

of course... IMHO, but I'm just one of those :D
Posted by Crook666 on 2014-08-06 16:09:05
I never used the timeout button. I've been cursing and crying in my room while waiting for noobs who moved one player every 2 minutes, I've been waiting, I rescheduled games, did all within the rules.

And frankly, calling this "illegal" has no point IMO, since you seem to think I could do something unfair only to score a touch down in a game I was about to lose anyway. I just wanted to get the game finished. Only rules I care about are the ones about my integrity, and I showed that by restraining from scoring when I realized the guy had been offline (as i said, he never left the game).

Maybe I am gonna create a team about this situation. Guess what the name will be?
Posted by easilyamused on 2014-08-06 16:16:00
Great, you didn't score. I applaud your integrity. Does not change the fact that it was technically an illegal timeout.

You dealt with it in a sensible manner while in game. However, the good spirit you showed to not take advantage has been undone in this poor attempt at a name and shame blog. Normally I would have deleted this blog but decided to leave it up because you had a problem that a lot of people are getting recently and this was a nice easy way for people to see a basic way of preventing it happening to them.

Automatic time out 2014.
Posted by Diceskill on 2014-08-06 16:39:23
It does happen that the client just stalls without dropping you out. It happenend to me not too long ago in a T15. I believed that my opponent had actually dropped out, when it was actually me who had trouble with the client. I was quite upset to find my opponent had finished the game without me (and timed me out to do it).
Posted by xnoelx on 2014-08-06 16:49:05
I've had a freeze in every game since the downtime last week. Usually towards the end of the game.
Posted by awambawamb on 2014-08-06 17:03:08
don't forget we are here for the FUN... c'mon man, don't do the italian :D
Posted by Crook666 on 2014-08-06 17:04:18
This is not a Blog anymore. This is a TEAM, and they're playing right now!!!
Posted by Verminardo on 2014-08-06 17:41:16
It frequently happens that one player is disconnected and it's not immediately apparent from the client. Also, the Fumbbl site rules on disconnects and their interaction with the timeout rules may not be the most intuitive, but easilyamused is right, it was an illegal timeout.

That said, yeah, it sucks if your opponent doesn't write a single word all match.

I'm gonna assume the part about Italians was meant to be a joke.
Posted by TFRiley on 2014-08-06 17:43:44

So the client had problems, I didn't know that, I didn't read a PM and I am a tosser.

Top-notch.

the spanish and italians have a terrible reputation here.

i'm not sure if it is entirely deserved, but it certainly exists.

We can just lump it up to ALL of the Europeans. Conceited, predjudiced, bigoted, inbred, insolent.....wait....

Oh....I am descended from an entire European line. Nevermind. :-)

Wait a minute though, if you guys are saying that Italians and Spanish are the worst I have now been awoken! My wife is half Italian, half Portuguese. This explains it all. Portugal is on the Spanish peninsula which makes it pretty similar, no?(Don't tell the mother-in-law I said that)

Seriously though, we all know the Americans are the best of what Europe had to offer.

I've also had a freeze every game since the site came back up. Usually it's me who drops, but a few times it's been my opponent. In several games, both coaches have had drops at different points in the game. And at least one time, I dropped 3 separate times in a single game. It's frustrating for both parties because it took us a while to figure out what was happening. Hopefully people are aware of this now and will at least attempt to determine whether they are the one who dropped or their opponent because the client does not shut down anymore on a drop.

I read your blog. I get you mafe a timeout mistake and your opponent acted like a prick.

But I think its pretty offensive to then take it out in a blog against everyone from that same culture. Many people would call that racist. I have only ever played against fun and friendly Italians on this site myself.

Recent game. Opponent disconnected 3 times. Then he stopped moving - thought he had disconnected again. I waited around...then found out that screen was still up but I had disconnected.

And you know what - there were no time outs...no accusations...just friendly banter and fun times by all.

Just relax and have some fun folks.
Posted by Purplegoo on 2014-08-06 21:25:23
Quite so.

Call me an old fuddy duddy, but back when we'd just crawled out of the primordial soup (dial up) and everyone had IRC (also before the timeout button, hot topic as that is), it felt a bit more relaxed around here. A bit... more like we understood issues such as these.

Just a small observation.
Posted by awambawamb on 2014-08-06 21:49:46
you're not old, you're just using the nice things Christer put on the site for us to play, something that should be taught to the newcomers...

Posted by Wreckage on 2014-08-07 00:09:17
It's very simple. You broke the site rules by timing him out. He was in the right and you weren't. You should have followed the disconnection rules after him being irresponsive for an extended period of time. As others mentioned you are not allowed to use the button for entirely inactive opponents even if they appear connected to the game. For some reason he decided not to report you to the administration.
Then you proceeded to break yet another rule by calling him names.

Piece of advice: A little bit of humility gets you further.

This is great. One guy writes a thread complaining about another one who is from Italy and saying that there are more than one italian which are not "polite" and, somehow, this ends up with a rebuke to the author and spanish players being impolite as well.
Posted by Verminardo on 2014-08-07 11:25:55
And here I was thinking we Germanz were the impolite ones. Too honest to be polite, as the saying goes. ;)

Hehe poor Crook, but I'm afraid you've made a mistake mate. I do understand how that happened, with your opponent not saying anything. Good thing to keep this blog around so we can learn from it. Read PM, say SOMETHING in chat ("no inglesa!" or whatever at the very least), and ask admins before posting a blog which backfires hehe ;)

oh, I'm pretty sure the Italians and the Spanish try to outdo each other in the jajajajajaj douchebag stakes.

I get where Crook is coming from, and I know I wouldn't actually time him out, Its always good to check your Pm's, Irc if something is amiss. It's pretty rude if someone says hi and doesn't respond, I occasionally get that, not the EHAHAHAH AYEAHAHAHAHEH EHAEAHAHAHAHA which is hilarious though. :D

I find it ironic that a guy named Crook666 is upset about being called a "stealer".

BTW... I believe the word your opponent was looking for was thief or crook. lol

I don't think you did anything so bad. It was an illegal timeout. You handled this situation wrong at 1st... but then you had the honor to correct it while still in game.
I remember the 1st time I violated a site rule... god times.

Just learn from it and move on. No reason to blog about it.
