After narrow losses against the Buccaneers and Legion, fans had to wait until week 3 before their heroes got their first point this season. The first draw came tonight against the Wolfskins after a veritable slugfest at the Pool with 4 TDs and no less than 10 casualties. We turn to our reporters who finally have triumphant players to talk to.
Hertha and Günther are in the CCC endzone together with a tall, strong woman and our favourite blonde team captain, although with a large bandage over her left eye. In the background, a celebrating home team can be seen, as well as a drunk Janine trying to knock down the goalpost with her head, mumbling something about the goalpost just having smashed her only whiskey bottle.
Hertha: (to Inga) “You were going into this divisional fight against the divisional leaders with two of the four blitzers missing, Inga. Did you have any expectations up front?”
Inga: “Of course. Wolfskins is an excellent team, but we showed against the Buccaneers that we can get out there be ultra-aggressive and get some sort of control against any team in the league. And we did that tonight as well. We have nothing to lose, and play like it, while many of our opponents tend to think in terms of preserving and protecting key players and thus play it safe. That’s one of our few advantages, and one we try to exploit. It was hard today, though, with Orlando and Robert missing, and then Stefan got badly hurt on the very first Wolfskins block in the game, and Janine got knocked out on their first foul… Thus we had to play the first drive totally without blitzers. And with further losses throughout the game it surely was all men and women to the pumps tonight!”
Hertha: “But you got the draw and even had a chance to win the game before Janine failed her last block.”
Inga: “That’s right! It’s getting to be a bad habit. T.J. failed to dodge for the draw in the game against the Buccaneers. And then there was me screwing up royally in the Legion game, first by failing to make the pass to an uncovered Cat and then by failing to pick up the ball in the second half, and now again tonight as Janine failed a block, which she rarely does. Actually, we could easily have had 5 points in three matches, instead of one.” Inga shrugs, but then smiles. “But we are very happy with todays draw. We have shown everyone that we will fight until the end and that we can handle even the very best this season.”
Günther: “I love that fighting spirit! But what with the bandage, Inga? Are you ready for more Blood Bowl?”
Inga: (shrugs again) “Just a scratch. Ran into one of Jenkins’ frantically waving hands and the coward stuck his finger in my eye. I’ll personally take it up with him in the next match against the Wolfskins for sure! Gonna miss the next match against the Grizzlies, tough.” She seems a bit sad… “But it’s no big problem. Darian will lead them to a victory, I know! He’s a good lad.”
Hertha: “And there seems to be no end to the female talent that your team can bring forth, Inga. Another fresh face made a big impact today, I understand?”
Inga points to the tall, lean, dark-haired woman beside her. Even though Inga herself is close to 5’11”, this woman is close to a head taller. “That’s right! This here is Nadja Kümmel. She has made a very good impression on training, and is now a given on our defensive starting formation.” The woman grins and shakes hands with Hertha and Günther. “Hi!”
Hertha: “A casualty and a touchdown against the divisional champs! Not bad for a newcomer to the team! Tell us about the TD, Nadja!”
Nadja: “Well, I was a starter on the offense for a change, and as Inga just said, our offensive drive quickly got FUBAR as the Wolfskins easily took out Stefan and Janine and surrounded us. They sacked Cat and there was a hell of a lot of maneuvering, dodging and blocking. In that scramble it was touch and go the whole time, and I managed to smash Luke Wilson’s hand and send him off seriously injured, only to get hit in the back by that big oaf Mumbay and floored. Max sent Mumbay crashing down, though, and as I struggled to get on my feet, Darian screamed to me to race for the goal line and he would get me the ball. I ran like crazy and got out of range of all Wolfskins, and there came Darian running with the ball, but just as he was about to make the pass, he stumbled and fell*! Vernon made a fantastic effort to reach the ball** but couldn’t pick it up, and Max and Anastasia ruthlessly brought him down as Darian got back on his feet, picked the ball up and handed it to me. I had a free run for it, and even had time to stall to make their last effort an OTTD attempt, but I had to dodge Vernon to do it.” She grins widely. “So that’s how I got on the scoreboard with a cas and a TD!”
Hertha: “And how do you like the team?”
Nadja: “I’m happy to be part of this team. Had a great time from day 1, and even though I’m still not a starter on the offense, I’m working hard and expect to get there before the season is over!”
Günther: “That’s the spirit!” He turns to Inga. “So do you still feel that you can get 16 points this season?”
Inga: “Absolutely. As I said earlier, all three matches could have turned out any which way, and we could easily have had five or six points now instead of the one we got. And best of all is that we showed today that absolutely every player on the team is ready to give their very best for the team. If we can keep that attitude, we will get the points, or die trying!”
Hertha: “And the next game is another classic, versus the Grizzlies in Praag. Be there to catch the excitement as Darian leads our heroes in a hunt for the first two-pointer of the season!”
