Dark Elf Painting Blog
My fickle nature has struck again and I have jumped onto my 3rd project in 3 months. Actually the Beast of Nurgle was a more time consuming conversion than anticipated and is requiring multiple sessions of greenstuff filling, dropping him and a hand snapping off didn’t help. I needed something to work on whilst I waited for the glue to dry or greenstuff to set and the dark elves were just sitting there waiting to be painted.

Dark elves have a special place in my heart as they were the first team I did for PeteW all the way back in 2007. I like that team and am proud of the job I did on them, though being made from spare models I had lying around they do suffer slightly from “weaponsnipitis” and the skirts on the linemen and blitzers are a bit impractical. This made it a challenge to improve on them using the practice and skills I had acquired over the last 7 years and 25 teams I had painted up since. Thankfully GW had released quite a few new and better plastic kits in that time and this opened up a lot of options. The High Elves I had done for the GT were a good source of inspiration too, along with quite a few leftover conversion bits.

From previous blogs you can see the test model I had painted up; silver armour, red clothing and some black details. That model was quite different from the actual linemen and I was unhappy with my initial colour scheme. With all armour pieces being silver the models were a tad bright and looked like high elves. To rectify this I painted all armour pieces aside from the chestplate black, but this made the model a bit dull. I finally hit upon the idea of painting the edge of the black armour plates gold. This was a lot more pleasing, I felt the colours were properly sinister and a tad regal, rather in fitting with the Royal Guard of an evil warlord. I had added some gold details to the previous dark elf team, but that was over silver and it didn’t quite work as well as the contrast with black.

Jan liked the idea of the team being painted with Drow skin and hair colours and I was a fan of this too having used it on PeteW’s team. I went for a slightly lighter and more realistic shade this time, adding light flesh to grey for highlights.

The boots and gloves gave me some pause as well since they took up quite a large amount of the model. Black was an option for these, but it is always a difficult colour to highlight. Too much and they go grey and too little risks it becoming a black void. Red was another option, but I wanted to keep that for the sleeves and bodysuit. I settled on a natural dark brown, this complimented the dark red I was already using and made the contrast of the small amount of silver and gold on the model more obvious. Had I gone with a mid or light brown this would have had less of an impact.

I pride myself that many of the teams I make are unique conversions, but that also fit in with the Bloodbowl universe. The other vital factor is that opponents should not be confused as to which position each model represents. The witches, assassin and runner all stood out as obvious, leaving just a method of differentiating the Blitzers from Linemen. The most obvious of these is that the Blitzers have heads, arms and torsos from black guard and cold one riders, giving them an appearance of having more elaborate and slightly heavier armour, in keeping with them being basically elite linemen (+MA and Block).

I wanted to continue that with the paint scheme, the armour on their gauntlets and arms helped so only the fingers of the leather part of their gloves were showing. I also painted the bottom part of their chestplates black as I thought that looked made the armour more complex and decorative, fitting their elite status. I did like there being a small amount of silver on display since the cold silver was a nice contrast to the warm gold, red and brown I’d used on the rest of the model.

The 4 other players were more diverse than the rest of the team, coming from a wider variety of models. They also have considerably less armour, this meant I had to do some thinking to get the right balance between keeping them in the team strip whilst also getting the mix right.

I felt the assassin should be largely clothed in black with minimal highlights, to avoid this being too dull the inner lining of his cloak and leggings were painted the same deep red as the rest of the team. Only his boots, pouches and knives were brown leaving him with less brown than the other players, similarly he had less armour and metal so there was less gold and silver than other players. But the assassin is a pretty unique player and he does retain the team colours, meaning this isn’t really an issue. Red and black being his predominate colours seemed appropriate in any case.
The witches and runner had a lot of bare skin which posed some difficulty as I’d only done faces prior to that. I wanted them to have natural looking grey skin without looking like it was facepaint or they were made of stone. To that end I added a light flesh tone for the highlights, the faces were a bit tricky but I was happy with how the witch midriffs turned out. They also had little in the way of armour or cloth, leaving a tricky balance of getting all the team colours on them without one colour dominating. Silver was the hardest to add and I ended up using that on their hair decorations.

I have managed to finish making the beast, he was based on one of the mutants holding aloft the Chaos Shrine. Whilst he was already pretty mutated he wasn’t quite nurlgy enough so I added a bunch of rotten bits from the plaguebearers. He already had multiple arms and some extra tentacles from the chaos spawn spruce added to the impression that escape from his clutches was impossible. His other arm was originally designed to integrate with the shrine which required me to sculpt a new thumb, the hand was textured to fit the shrine as well. To hide this I gave him a nurgling to hold and added another tugging on one of his intestines. All these conversions required a lot of greenstuff flilling which is why he took so long to complete. Once he is done the team will only need to be based, varnished and numbers added to be finished.

awesome as always! *_*
...and that's exactly how I'd imagined my DE army, 10 years ago... and started losing games in WHFB! (Dark Elves... Seriously... If I'd had known...)

The assassin and the beast are my favourites.
Amazing stuff mate :-)

I think the color scheme is great, and the Blitzers gold, silver, black, brown and red all mix really well! Nice stuff. The beast is disgusting - so cud's on that too ;)

Exactly how you imagined DE? O_o
DE are pale-skinned in WHFB.

Awesome dude.

I like my guys in skirts though. ; p

Still proud to have the team that launched 25 commissions! :D

Kudos to Spubbbba: we had a lot of emails sharing thoughts about how the team had to look. I think that being able to listen, and then still surprise you with the final result, and the ability to turn your incomplete and doubtful thoughts into an awesome display of very real models and colours are a testament to his talent.

We negotiated the colours, but when he ended up showing me the first linos I was astonished and left speechless. They were different, but still the same, and they worked in a way I couldn't imagine before. We negotiated the customized minis, and yet when he showed me the blitzers they looked far more awesome than I had imagined.

Dude, you rock.
:)
