Blood Bowl is like Magic
Specifically, Blood Bowl is like Magic: the Gathering.

For those who are not familiar, Magic is a trading card game where constructing the deck is half the fun. The many choices made in constructing a deck are constrained by the size and diversity of your collection. Theoretically, Magic players with a large enough budget can construct any deck. Over time, collections grow, and the decks improve. This process feels a lot like developing a Blood Bowl team.

After the initial roster selection, Blood Bowl team development is quite random. Most SPP's come from random (or semi-random) sources. Then the dice rolls determine which skills can be selection. Whenever, I select a skill it feels like opening a pack of magic cards. Usually, I just get a skill. Sometimes I get a stat up or double, and it feels like opening that card I have been searching for.

My human team got noticeably better after the Ogre rolled doubles (yay block!). The +AG lineman is also going to be fun. The first level up on my chaos dwarf was +ST on the bull centaur. A fast, reliable ST 5 guy is a huge asset. Team development is enjoyable because of these random elements.

Blood Bowl has a lot of imperfections which I love to criticize, but sometimes rolling dice just feels good.

bollocks they do.

you choose who scored, you can farm passes, you give MB to the guys you wanna skill fast, etc

not random at all.

You made a really good point in this blog. Why can't I spend all my ramen money on paying Christer to give my teams more SPPs?

Well I think environments where TV is super important, it's a bit MtG esque. However in environments which aren't. Leagues, Stunty division, certain rosters it isn't like it much at all.

Except for the part where you have a fun game of magic, and afterwards all your best cards are dead. The fact that this can happen makes BB more epic! =D

No, York City are magic

Hi, I'm Shraaaag and I'm a Magic: the Gathering addict. I've been "sober" for 17 years now. I ended up selling my card collection (cheap) in order to rid myself of the temptation to continue playing the game.

Blood Bowl is as addicting, but cheaper in the long run.

Both are excellent games.

Maybe if I got to tear up your creature cards that I killed so that you couldn't use them again. Mu-ah-ha!

If we could find a blitz-combo-control cycle in BB, I'd agree with you.

Gather all magic mens.

The only things that are similar is broad general themes, you play the odds, have to make the right moves in the right order, sometimes luck ruins your game and you can build your team/deck your own way (but few does successfully).

Regular updates, nerfing decks, buying cards every year, combos, accepting cheese, rule changes and team development is some of the biggest differences.

You know what else is like magic?

My @#$@!

BB would be better, if every coach would have one unique RR per game, which allows you RR an opponent's roll!

I rather would enjoy a player I can tear down in pieces to destroy half of my opponent's roster.

well that's to magic!

MTG my #1 boardgame, blood bowl #2 ;)

Part of the reason i like Blood Bowl almost as much as MTG is, that it shares some basic principles that keeps you hooked:

1) steep learning curve if you want to excel in your games
2) you always have the chance to win even if your opponent is a better player or his team / deck composition is better than yours. This means the game is never "over" before the game is actually over, which leads to intense gaming moments
3) my local MTG community is really great and fumbbl and Fun League (in cyanide) has a really great community as well. Sadly our local Blood Bowl community has dried out :<
