Mistakes Were Made
After another tie that I didn't deserve (should have lost), I am wondering about how much skill actually helps a coach. Near the end of the 1st half of this game , I had a turn with several errors:
  1. thinking I could blitz twice,
  2. blitzing the wrong guy,
  3. going on tilt when I realized the blitzing error,
  4. ignoring a ball carrier in scoring position, and
  5. focusing on a marginal foul.

The entire plan was terrible, and I gave away a free score to the dwarfs. The correct blitz was the ball carrier of course. I could should have then followed that up with a low percentage pass to try to score.

Both coaches made some smaller mistakes, but I think my turn 8 is the most obvious error. Better luck gave me a chance to steal the ball and tie in the 2nd half. However, my opponent definitely played better than me because my plans were worse. Given the dice, I should have won this game or at least been attempting to win rather than tie.

I like luck and randomness in games. It provides replay-ability and creates exciting moments. However, I am wondering if reducing randomness would lead to a better game. Of course, it would amplify the consequences for mistakes and maybe Blood Bowl doesn't need that. Sometimes it is better to be a lucker noob than have real skill.

Blog How you like sir.

Well you are forgetting one important thing, more important than skill. Tenaciousness or never giveupness. Keeping a clear head, and keep on trucking for that result is massively important.

It is a definitely a game where the best man doesn't always win (unless the gulf is huge), especially over one game or even a tournament. But the surprise is part of the appeal too.

If you look for a BloodBowlgame with fewer dicerolls... Spectate the good coaches, and see what they do. They roll less dice than the rest of us, minimizing the randomness of their games, and partly therefore winning more games. Positioning of players is also a huge factor.

So no need to alter the rules, one need to alter his own playingstyle. ;)

I like this kind of blog, where people think about the game and errors that were made. We all think the game differently, so others views are nice reading.

Fine blog, no whining, giving possibilities for both opinions in general or specific advice/feedback on your game. Keep them coming I'd say.

The biggest winning factor is for top rosters against joke ones, Woodies vs Flings.

The second winning factor is for high TV vs low TV, at +300 or more you'll win heaps, but high TV joke teams will still lose (while doing some damage to smaller teams).

Coach rating figures third, having +10 CR over your opponent with matched teams means you'll win pretty reliably. That's the skill element. The last few coaches in Fumbbl Cup were all 170+ CR with 2100+ TV teams from good rosters.

Luck is last. High TV Ogres have a terrible win rating, but they still win some even against a better coach, because some days they get all skulls and you get all pows, but it's pretty rare. The thing is, if you're about as good a coach, with similar size teams, and well-matched rosters, it absolutely comes down to the dice.

Play slower. Take 3-4 minutes on important turns.

I know there are a lot of people out there who swear on the luck but I for myself tend to think the game could do completely without any.

I have been secretly working on a conversion of the game into a pure strategy game (although it's so invasive it's rather a completely new game.)

As for the game: I like that you have identified issues in your game play. And a lot a that. Try to play a flawless game and reevaluate the outcome. You'll be surprised how rarely you lose when you can't find any mistakes ;).

tussock, you'd be surprised if you saw some of the graphs I've done in terms of win rate vs various factors. TV difference has a much lower effect on win rate than you'd expect. Also, CR has a huge impact and should be first on your list.

But there are rules against picking by TV but not against picking by CR/experience?

@SalTheChin: Calm down. Take slower turns if you have to. Don't go "on tilt".

I think that the game would be hugely improved by reducing the randomness, using a different dice system and more modifiers.
It would amplify the consequences for mistakes? Maybe, but you can work on your mistakes and with some experience reduce them or avoid them at all, while you can't prevent crazy lucky plays of your opponents when the randomness is high, even if you are very experienced.

I like the randomness, it's the spice of blood bowl. Ogre charges on a snotling, triple skulls and dies! Stuff like that is what blood bowl is all about.

Sal, never panic, always keep your cool. Blitz the ballcarrier if you can.

After reading all of his blogs I don't think people get he wants to be a journalist for the community. Oh and on topic randomness is what ever, winning is good.
